About Us
Welcome! We're excited that you want to learn more about us
Background
At least 10 per cent of the Ugandan population (including Busoga) live and work abroad and it is undeniable that the diaspora is critical to the transformational journey of their country of origin. Individuals in the diaspora have great capacity of becoming agents that create transnational connections and initiatives to support their homeland which can be made possible through the advancement of new information and communication technologies. Technology provides an invaluable tool to galvanize these diasporic efforts to tap into the unlimited potential of the digital space and collaboration. Through the employment of information technology, diasporas have the capacity to influence policy changes easily and quickly, to show their solidarity through lobbying, strengthening professional networks and relationships and retaining social bonds to their homeland and psychological links to their identity (by remaining in touch with their loved ones).
Online media is an advanced technology that plays a significant role in the diasporic experience, facilitating communication, identity negotiation, and the construction of collective narratives. The use of internet technologies and online spaces, such as discussion forums, allows diasporic communities to maintain connections with their home countries and engage in transnational communication. Media consumption about or originating from the home country becomes embedded in the daily routines of diasporic individuals, contributing to their sense of cultural and political belonging helping individuals negotiate distance, control information, and make sense of their spatial positioning. Overall, media plays a crucial role in shaping and maintaining diasporic identities, facilitating communication, and providing a platform for collective expression and negotiation.
Therefore in launching the Yaiffe online platform, the organization hopes to provide an all-in-one space for diaspora individuals with origins from Busoga and beyond, their organizations and partners to interact and exchange ideas as they work towards their shared development goals. This will be achieved through the online magazine/news bulletin; and later on through an online Television and Radio.
